The staff are great and the room I had was very cosy, perfect for a Jan cold stay, it’s got heating but they do provide an additional heater in case The pub itself is very popular - kudos to the owners but it did mean I never got a chance to grab a drink there - and also the guest wifi doesn’t really work for streaming when the pub is busy Overall as long it’s very centrally located, just 10min walk from the station - and therefore perfect for a sightseeing trip

I know its a very old building but I don’t think it could be more non disabled friendly if it tried. Steps in, no disabled toilets, double flights of stairs to bedroom. Big step into shower. Lots of noise from other residents and york Minster bells in the morning. Staff were great though. Food exquisite. Room very hot and no way to open windows up fully.

Room was beautiful and well decorated for the age of the building. We were on the top floor so be prepared for wonky stairs. Main floor is lively with patrons but noise did not carry - was loud outside with music til 11pm and guests dining but we had our window open to be fair and we did not mind it at all. Bed was comfortable and staff was very helpful - great location beside York Minster and walkability score excellent. Highly recommend!

Full of character Beautiful furnishings. We had small executive double room , bed really comfortable , en-suite modern and clean Breakfast huge and delicious ! Across the road from York Minster Only minor complaint was that the bar closed early (around10.30) Other than that it was perfect and will definitely return

Great Historic Hotel in the Heart of York

This historic property where Guy Fawkes was born 500 years ago has amazing atmosphere. Not a single wall, floor, ceiling, door or other architectural feature is straight, which adds to its interesting provenance. The room was really well decorated with 4 poster bed and modern bathroom. Area to sit, TV etc. Location is literally across the street from York Minster, and 5 minute walk (or less) to the Shambles. Parking was convenient 5 minute walk, but you can drop off baggage just 20 meters from the front door. Would gladly stay again.

Very historical and quaint with central access to tourist areas. Wi-fi signal was very poor and intermittent in the room which was also tired and poorly maintained. Great staff, location, historical quirkiness, but property undergoing scaffolded exterior maintenance as was nearby buildings allowed for early morning workman wake up calls! Good food, drinks, outdoor indoor ambience however, residence? Not so much.

Not For Me

The pictures of the room were adorable. I was excited to stay in such a historic and quaint place. But pictures cannot fully encapsulate the experience. I would not stay here again! I should have listened to some of the reviews warning of the uneven floors, crooked stairs, noisy chandelier, and smelly room. I felt like I was in a haunted house.
