Aviation history was made in St. Petersburg On January 1, 1914 when the first commercial airline took off from St. Petersburg and landed to a crowd of over 3000 in Tampa. Tony Jannus flew the Benoist watercraft 25 minutes to Tampa. A replica of the Benoist that was flown on 75th anniversary hangs from the ceiling. Me. Janus was killed 1916 in Germany while teaching two pilots. The Tony Jannus award is given out every year to recognize the most outstanding person in commercial aviation.
